Tokyo Metropolitan University’s Faculty of Law has been providing the necessary specialized education in legal studies and political science for the next generation, based on the fruits of many years of research and educational activities.
As Japan’s population shrinks and it transforms into a superannuated society, we are faced with a range of challenges, such as measures to combat possible future large-scale disasters, transitioning to a decarbonized society, and promoting digitization. To handle these difficult challenges, we need to understand the current state and history of Japanese society and the international environment surrounding it, acquire the means to calmly analyze the factors leading to the various challenges and strategies to resolve them, and attain a viewpoint that provides a future-oriented outlook.
Therefore, we aim to offer “specialized education that draws out the abilities of each individual student” and foster eager personnel who will confront modern society’s many challenges using the theories and methods of legal studies and political science. We have a full complement of instructors who are experts in their fields and have arranged lecture courses where students can learn the fundamentals and systematic theories of fields of specialty and specialized seminars where they can exhibit their autonomy.
This faculty’s graduates are active in a wide range of fields, including corporations, the public sector, and local government. Besides progressing to law schools at any university, those aiming for the legal profession can also choose our Law School within the legal profession development program established in AY2020. Those aiming to be specialist researchers in legal studies or political science can also move into our researcher development graduate school, which enjoys a solid reputation.
I look forward to everyone’s aggressive attempts at these challenges.

The Department of Law and Political Science in the Graduate School of Law and Political Science consists of the fields of law and political science. Something common to both fields is the friendly and precise research guidance provided from a broad perspective by staff who are energetically active in the center of the academic world. The Department aims to cultivate researchers specializing in the law and political science, as well as professionals and civil servants with high-level academic knowledge, and it has obtained a significant track record for this up to the present time.
The distinctive feature of the education in this Department is that two types of seminars work together like the wheels of a vehicle. Special research seminars are assiduously conducted in small groups, and general seminars are provided in the form of study groups, in which graduate students and faculty members from various fields participate. These enable students to develop in-depth research skills specialized in individual specialisms, as well as the comprehensive ability to examine research subjects from multiple perspectives.
The Department also provides a complete research environment. All of its graduate students are given individual seats and bookshelves for research and have access to the Faculty of Law Library (Law and Politics Research Room), which has an extensive collection of books and materials on the law and political science. In addition, graduate students in the doctoral program are given the opportunity to publish their research results as academic articles in the Journal of Law and Politics, and in addition, they can also access research support through the Postdoctoral Fellowship and Specialized Fellowship programs.
The faculty members look forward to many of you who are interested in studying law and political science taking on the active challenge of studying in the Department.
